What is a Cheesesteak?

By G-Knows | November 20, 2015 | Cheesesteaks, Contests, Recipes, Specials

If you aren’t a fan already, you probably wonder what exactly is a cheesesteak. It is a sandwich that has thin-sliced beefsteak that has been sautéed along with melted cheese on a long hoagie roll or bun. Often, cheesesteaks have sautéed onions on them as well. Cheesesteaks were developed in the early 1930’s by Harry and Pat Olivieri.

The Olivieris have been credited with inventing the cheesesteak sandwich after having served chopped steak on Italian rolls. While the history is often debated, some claim that the Olivieris owned a hot dog stand and decided to make the sandwich. Legend claims Pat was eating the sandwich when a cab driver saw it and requested one. This sandwich variation was sold at their hot dog stand in South Philadelphia and as popularity increased, Pat decided to open a restaurant that still operates today in Philadelphia. Pat’s King of Steaks continues to sell cheesesteaks.

While the original cheesesteak sandwich did not have cheese on it, provolone was said to have been added by a manager of Philadelphia’s Ridge Avenue store. Because people enjoyed the flavor, cheese started being added all the time. Cheesesteaks remain popular today and are served in restaurants, food carts and cafeterias throughout Philadelphia and all across the country. There are multiple variations of the sandwich today, and many dining establishments outside of Philadelphia refer to the sandwiches as Philly cheesesteaks.
